first one who gets it right and explains why the answer is what it is gets the ten points. I already know the answer so don't give me crap about doing my own homework. Its July for Christ sake!

I'll give you a hint, its not 1.
Also for me to give you the ten points you need to explain in mathematical terms why anything to the zero power is the same answer.

x and n is any number, (x cannot be 0)
since x^n-n=x^0,
also x^n-n=(x^n)/(x^n)=1
therefore, x^0=1

since 5^0=1
therefore, -5^0=-(5^0)=-1

Multiplication starts with the axiom that there is a basic number which is 1. Any other number, such as -5 is really 1x(-5). If you square -5, i.e. calculate (-5)^2, this amounts to the product 1x(-5)x(-5) and so on for higher powers. If you want (-5)^0, then you just have the basic 1 with no further multiplier, so the answer is 1 whatever number is used, -5 or any other. The replies that say the answer is -1 are incorrect.
Note that a similar situation exists in addition and subtraction where the basic number is 0. Any other number, such as 2, can be thought of as 0+2. Two 2s corresponds to 0+2+2 and so on. If there are no 2s then you just have the basic number 0.

Of course it is 1!
Any number to the power of 0 is always 1!

-1 but the reason is that -5 is really -1 times 5 and only the 5 goes to the power of zero, i dunno, same is not true for -5^2=25
the reason goes to rule about subtractiong exponents when dividing like numbers, i.e. 5^3/5^2= 5, you subtract ...3-2=1
so 5^3/5^3=1... 3-3=0
am i getting close?

The answer is one, for that reason any number raised to the power of 0 is going to be one.

-5^0 = -(5^0) = -(1) = -1

the ^ must be done before the - in terms of order of operations:

Brackets
Exponents
Division and Multiplication, left to right
Addition and Subtraction, left to right
