It was hijacked by the Republican party and used to call everyone else UNpatriotic. The whole thing makes me want to puke.

Americans take for granted the freedoms we have. If they were more open to learn of the struggles of other countries, they would be thankful for what they have.
We Americans , seem to live in a bubble, we barely know news regarding our country and our own surroundings, but no one is aware of the things that go on in other countries where they don't have the freedoms we do. People don't know what they have until they lose it. I hope that day never comes. And I also think that teaching patriotism doesn't just have to be in schools , it has to be in our homes.
When Independance Day comes , Veterans Day or Flag Day or anything like that comes , everybody wants the 3 day weekends and the picnics and the drinking , but no one ever tells the story of why we celebrate it. Tell your children, nephews, grandchildren, students what these days are about and they might be more greatful for what we have.

Patriotism is not as widespread as it should be, you are right. However, I think many Americans are finally waking up to the fact that our involvement in the problems of other countries and cultures, is just a way to get around our own needs. Oil. The government uses this tactic to get what they want. Like the weapons of mass destruction. Did they find any? No. They just wanted Hussein out of power so we could benefit from a new government. Oil. Americans are not stupid. If this was happening in our own backyard, I think people would defend to the end. But why are we fighting for people that hate us, and are continually threatening and killing our troops. Oil.

We're at war. Most of us don't agree with it, and now, today with all the events over in the middle east it appears it could have been the spark to ignite a major world war.
Sorry, I'm not in the flag-waving mood. Gas prices, war, inflation, a president MOST - MOST Americans just do not get anymore.
Patriotism will come back when our country is well again. Right now it's very ill.

Mostly it is the IDIOTS that seem to blame Bush for everything. The lack of support for the country seems to go hand in hand with the "main stream" media. They do not promote patriotism so why should most people! The media promotes all that is bad with the US and none of the good.

I can only speak for myself, but I still get chills and a lump in my throat whenever I hear The Star Spangled Banner. I am proud to be an American! Those who do not like it here should leave!
God Bless the USA and all who serve, have served and those who paid the ultimate price to keep the freedoms of this fine nation. Thank You!

Good questions, the people that scream loud and bash this country would end up in a jail or dead in many other countries.
They bad mouth wars and people fighting and are too dumb to realize that we did fight and people did die and if they did not do that..then they would have no freedoms.
I was in the army, my son is in the Navy.. I have seen the world. This is a great country and I am happy and proud to be here.

The American patriotism is still here but not as strong as it once was because of the idiots who let people trash our country.

Patriotism is "Pride", and alot of Americans have no pride in anything...we've grown apathetic about anything except our own selfish needs and are perfectly content to let everyone fend for themselves. It's hard to have pride in your country if your own life is void of any pride of self or your fellow-man.
