It gives no one "closure" and no matter how many reasons you pile up, there is no avoiding the simple fact that you're either an adult or you are not. A 12-18 year old person is legally presumed incompetant to vote, to enter into a contract, to consent to sexual activity, to work full time, to posess an unrestricted liscence to drive but is considered competant to be held to the same standard as an adult when it comes to crime? Outrageous!

A couple I have heard before are:

1. If you are over 13 you know the difference between right and wrong as much as an "adult" does.

2. Gangs purposefullly use youth to commit crimes such as drug deliveries because they aren't incarcerated so by not doing the whole "equal punishment" thing we are encouraging them to prey on youth.

3. Some youth are multiple felony offenders by the time they're 16 so the non-prison route isn't working.

4. If you're old enough to do the crime you're old enough to do the time. (Catchy huh!)

5. Children mature much faster these days and are more worldly.

How about if you're mature enough to commit an adult crime, then you're mature enough to accept the adult punishment?

And a system that tells young adults they will not go to prison under any circumstances will give them free reign to do whatever they want...to whomever they want.

Prison being more dangerous to young adults than adults is a reflection upon the prison system. Rather than not send young adults to prison, we should fix the part of the system that endangers young adults.

Prison is not supposed to be a nice place. If you say you can't send young adults to prison because it's bad for them, then what about short people? What about guys that weight 120 pounds or less? What about people with red hair?

We should make clear to young adults (and adults) that if you commit the appropriate crime, you are going to prison...and prison sucks. So DON'T commit the crime in the first place.

it may scare the child into not wanting to do it again.

maybe it will put the child in deeper thought about his actions.

it will open the persons eyes to where he will spend his time if he doesn't shape up.

it will make the family (victim) feel better if he gets put in there.

he can seek treatment there and still be in prison

it will open the offenders eyes to what real criminals are like.

it will teach him to shape up his life.

face it prison is probably a lot worse than any treatment center so maybe the shock of just going to prison will be enough.

maybe he will mature a little.

If a young adult murders someone in cold blood, is the crime less horrible because a youngster committed the crime? The punishment should fit the crime irregardless of age.

How about it teaches them and others that there are consequences for their actions.
