YES, the EGR can cause exactly what you describe. The valve can carbon up & get stuck open causing the car to idle rough.
A couple of things,
1) Check the condition of the EGR before you buy a new one.
remove the EGR and clean any carbon from the hole in manifold as well as in the EGR. You can check them with a hand vacuum pump to make sure the diaphragm is good. Most places like O'reilly's & Autozones will check them for you or let you use their pump in the store for free. Get a new one only if the old one checks bad. They are simple devices so it's easy to tell.
2) make sure there isn't any vacuum lines leaking including the one to EGR. Check all the others, a vacuum leak will cause the same sort of symptoms.

The EGR valve is not in use when your car is in idle. I would try tune- up, then look at the O-2 sensor.

Good Luck

Doesn't matter.....just unplug the vaccum line going to the egr and put a screw in that vaccum line. EGR valve is a waste of metal and rubber anyway. If it does have a problem....it will be remedied, if the EGR is not bad, it will prevent problems in the future when it does go bad.

2. Burnt Valve
3. Bad Timing Chain
4. Bad cam lobe(s)
5 Bad valve spring (s)
6. Blown head gasket
7.Exhaust Leak
8. Used up Spark Plugs
9. Bad plug wires (arcing, etc.)
10. etc. etc.

Engines cannot tolerate EGR at idle. If your EGR valve is leaking, your symptoms would be just as you describe.

good job
