Yes you can. The golden rule is, if the information is "invaluble" to you, treat it as such and back it up. Ask yourself HOW important it is. This will answer whether to back it up, (or take online advice from amateurs like me instead!). XP uses NTF file system, 98/me etc uses only FAT32. XP can have and use fat 32 partitions in tandem, with NTF, therby read them. If your HD contains no operating system, it will, of course have to be a SECOND hard drive, and Not defined as drive C: because the system bios will try to read from it, and finding no operating system, may not look elsewhere, depending on the bios settings, so youll get an error message. Use the physical jumper ( a small plastic bar on the disk case ) pull it out, and replace it differently, according to the diagram on the drive, or instructions from the net for your drive, to make it a SLAVE. Insert it as the second h.drive. Best done, after first running new pc, with main hard drive and setting it up, then shuting down, plug out! Then add second drive, (re power) windows will find it, and give you instructions. If there is any problem with fat32/ntf windows should tell you, and give instructions, BUT dont format the drive!! if it suggests to. Stop, remove drive safely, and consult Qualified computer shop to avoid loosing data, or "play" and learn, at risk of loosing data. Ground yourself by touching radiator etc before going in the case of a (turned off!) computer, the tinyest of electrical currents can blow micro circits, and loose data!

As long as you have a spare channel on your motherboard it will be 100% fine, I have moved hard drives numerous times and they have always been perfect. On Windows XP at least , it's plug & play.
