A few reasons;
1. Vieri has loud mouth, that is not good for morale, especially with the corruption scandal on.
2.He spent a large time on the Milan bench, before heading to France, of all places. You can't expect Lippi to travel there every weekend, to have a look at Vieri.
3. He was dogged by injury.
4. He is much to old to be considered the permanent striker. Look at Del Piero and Inzaghi, both proven goal-scorers but Lippi used them mainly as back-up. It is important that your attack has youthful enthusiasm, to run after loose balls and be handful for defenders.
5. He has a bad relationship with the media, any failure to win matches or failure by Vieri to score would be dramatized by the media.
6. He's had his chances in 1998 and 2002, as well as the Euros of 2000 and 2004, and he did not really deliver. It is fair to let someone else (like Gilardino and Toni) have a crack.
