It means you think you're better than everybody else, maybe because of your financial wealth, I.Q., social status. Hitler and his Aryan race were elitists, so it does have a negative connotation. Although, an F-16 fighter pilot, for example, is considered part of an elite group of pilots, but if he/she gets all snotty about it, they're being elitist.

I think that a couple of people are mixing the idea with being elite to the idea of wanting to be elite. Elitism is not the act of but the want of being elite. These are people who have to belong to the elite, they need to be part of it in every way. They see themselves as better then everyone around them. And will settle for nothing but the best no matter the cost. For them there is no other way of life. Elton John is elite, but someone who has to sit on every board of every major company in his area wants to be elite. That person is an example of elitism.

Elitism is few of a kind, most rich most powerful most gifted members of a group. I am not sure if the ones youmention are inthis category but for sure they think that they are.

When people act like they belong to a group that is better than other people. Or actually, when people are better than others and the other's get annoyed about it, they call it elitism.
