It could be a royal walnut moth, silkworm, tomato worm, striped oakworm, or a hackberry emperor caterpillar (a young one)--to name a few.

I use a site for bug identification called www.whatsthatbug.com that is pretty cool--I have copied the links to the caterpillar pages below. I bet that if you look through the photos you will see your caterpillar.

Try looking for a book on butterflies and moths. Silkworms are usually white with brown faces. I just looked in my nature guide book and the only caterpillar that seems to match your description is the tiger swallow tail catterpillar.

But try doing a web search or going to the library and getting a book on butterflies and months, that should be able to tell you what type of caterpillar you found.

Hawk moths are generally green with brown antennae, there are several different kinds that vary in size and markings, if it's spinning silk it's probably getting ready to pupate- it'll spin a cocoon out of silk and then in a few weeks or so emerge as a butterfly or moth.

Hard to say without a pic. If it has silk it was probably getting ready to spin a cocoon or turn into a chrysalis.
