I was really impressed with Schweinsteiger's game against Portugal and even though only two of the three goals are going on his account, those of us who watched the game know that he also kicked the one that turned into an own goal. I was wondering if there has ever been a game when a single player scored three times in a Worldcup game. That seems like quite an accomplishment. What is the record that one player scored during the WC?

Yes, there have been numerous hat tricks in a world cup. In fact, this is the first cup in a long time, perhaps ever, I am not sure, that did not have a hat-trick (a player who scored three goals in a game). The last world cup player to get a hat-trick was Portugals Pauleta, who scored three times in Portugals 4-0 win over Poland in group play in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The record for most goals in a single game is 5, by Oleg Salenko, of Russia. I have a question: Why didn't you just type in "World Cup Finals hat tricks" in yahoo.com's search engine and do a search.
Salenko got 5 in '94 vs. Cameroon in a match I saw live in SF.
By the way, quite an accomplishment? Yeah, in low-scoring boring WC 06 it would have been but there have been loads of hat tricks esp. back when soccer was actually good to watch.
