Okay, so my pc is not too old. I got it in april of 2004, brand new and I have Xp proffesional. It has two drives, one samsung dvd-rom and one cd-rw-rom. However, the problem started when I got my ipod nano and inserted the installation disk into the cd-rom drive. the autostart came on, and it seemed to have installed, but no icon appeared on my desktop and i searched for "ipod" in add/remove programs, and there was no listing. so then i put it in my dvd-rom and same thing happened. I gave up later wanted to see some jpg.s on a cd. I inserted the cd and it seemed to be reading it, but didn't start. I went to My Computer, and to my surprise neither the Cd-rom drive D:\ nor the DVD-rom drive E:\ was listed! I inserted other cds to test it, and they were not recognized. I went to the Add Hardware wizard and tried to reinstall them, but it said that it was not able to. So i tried to install it with the DEell Resource CD for drivers, but it didn't work since the roms don't. What to do?!!!

ummm... its almost impossible for your cd-rom drive to uninstall itself...... if you have windows xp and i'm assuming you do.... then windows xp would automatically find your cd-rom drive....

its possible that some of the driver files needed to run the cd-rom were corrupted and windows xp wouldn't be able to fix that...... or another possibility is that your cd-rom is dead.... which would mean you would have to buy a new one. they are very cheap...

please give more information about your system... like what operating system you are using and what type of cd-rom it is.....

i would also have to assume you have an older computer since pretty much all the computer made for the past 3 to 4 years all come with a CD Burner or even a DVD-Rom... most new pc's now come with a DVD-Burner....

If it's not working and it's not reading ANY discs, maybe you need to buy a new one.

I find it odd that software can uninstall itself. But I'm sure someone will say it's possible.

Typically, if the drive was working, you'd be able to install even a generic driver.

You might want to check the cables to be sure nothing is loose. Or your drive might need to be cleaned.

Just some ideas.

go to add/remove hardware in the control panel and see if it can be found, if not you'll need to get it looked at and maybe replaced. It might just be a loose cord or need a new cord.

unless it's broken or a connection is loose or it's on windows 3.1 or you have a very proprietary drive with it's own drivers, you only need to restart the computer. try safe mode. a virus is also a possibility
