It depends how "well" you want it to function at gaming. At that price point you're not really going to be able to buy a computer very capable of gaming. If you want to buy a gaming computer nowadays, you either have to spend an arm and a leg, or upgrade the video card yourself. I'd recommend getting on the phone with someone like Dell or HP and have them configure something for you. If you want a reasonable price your probably going to buy one without a video card, and then put one in yourself. Gaming on a PC nowadays can be expensive.

Dell. even if it is the cheapest most basic model, it's the best computer. i'm going into my third year in college and my freshman year i went through three computers because of viruses and breakdowns. i finally got the dell and have had it for a year and a half with no problems. it comes with great security and virus protection on it, and runs very fast.

definitly recommend it.

The best way to get a new computer, and for a very good price, is to build it yourself. You can build an excellent mid-level rig for about $600, which would play the latest games very nicely.

Use your old case (if you can), monitor, keyboard/mouse, etc. Get a few fans for cooling and you're on your way. Most of this stuff even comes with a better warranty than what dell/compaq/hp offers, and they would probably charge around $1,500--minimum--for this kind of hardware.
