Their companions are parrots because they are the only creatures which can reproduce the human voice. Also, in the gypsy culture, they are used to bring fortune.

Probably became widely thought of from the story "Treasure Island", specifically from the character "Long John Silver". There is a deal of controversy on this subject as many people suspect that pirates were much too practical to deal with pets. A parrot permanently stationed on the shoulder of a pirate would regularly generate a mess. As well, a parrot might get in the way of work, or be consumed during hard times at sea. So it is highly unlikely that having a parrot, or any pet for that matter, was too popular with pirates... Maybe some pirates dealt with their pet's messes just like some people today?

Parrots are fantastic animals, fun, affectionate, very intelligent. Pirates frequented the Carribean and the coast of Central and South America, where parrots live, naturally.

Parrots (on the shoulder, generally squawking "Pieces of eight, braak!" or "Polly wann'a cracker!") and Monkeys: sometimes pirates would keep animals aboard to supply fresh food; exotic animals such as parrots and monkeys would be of no use to them, however, though it has been suggested that pirates may have kept such animals for selling at high prices.
