Ever so few have been nominated for an oscar?? They nominate the same amount every year.
Although, I agree, movies suck now. There's way too much emphasis on out-grossing everyone else and fluff; art and value have gone down. It's probably due to the special effects and what not available nowadays...they are still relatively new, and technology is still improving by leaps and bounds. Film makers like to play with what they can do with all that stuff, and story suffers as a result (Case in point: Pirates of the Carribbean 2).
I think it will swing back...in another decade or so, all we'll get will be movies that are waaay too artsy and not glamorous enough. Everything comes in waves and tides.

Um, I think the same number of movies have been nominated for oscars every year for like the last 50 years. Movies are different now. Hollywood realizes that people steal movies all the time, and know they are going to make less money off of them now than in the past. So, they put out a lower quality product so they can pay less to make it, charge more for people to watch it at the theater so they can try to make up the money as quick as possible, and basically don't care about the customer (the people who are forking out $8-12 a show). There are a lot of fundamental things wrong with the movie industry that need to be fixed before we start seeing "good" movies again.

We are shown the blockbusters because they pay for advertising on cable and pay for hype. Visit sites like Apple.com or ComingSoon.net to see all kinds of previews or attend film festivals. That way, you will see the littler, lessor known films and try to see them. Movies are still wonderful, it's just that the big money movies are few and far between. A lot of great movies have been released in the last 6 years, just look beyond Oscar nods and gross sales.

that is a good question. i see alot of beaty over substance, which leaves the consumate actors playing bit parts. i think that we are now in the age where all you have to do is look good on screen,so therefore there is no demand for good movies. plz take a look at the box office numbers brokeback mountain is nowhere near mr pretty boy johnny depps movie pirates.

I think one problem is the directors. Once a director gets popular, the producers give them more latitude. When that happens you get 3 hour movies because the director wants every stinking minute they filmed to be in the movie. Take the new Pirate's movie. nearly 3 hours. A very good 2 hour movie with 45 minutes of wanting it to end.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Also, all the scary movies have the same plot and ending. To answer your question though, it is a new generation and a new time since 2000 and it's all so dull.

You, dear friend, probably are like me and like the old movies better than the new. Producers now have to write for the new generation, leaving the older watchers going "What is this crap?"
Not to say I don't like all new movies, but that's my opinion.
re: talking in movies; one of the CEO's of WB was opposed to that with the quote "Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?"

You only notice this from 2000?
Seriously, I think it has to do with laziness. With new technology making our lives easier and easier. We don't have to think of a single thing to get through our days. I think that with this laziness, the cost has been creativity. Think of all the past philosophers, writers, painters, movies...etc etc. that have made a visible impact on our minds and thought patterns and lives. Now think of all the current.....can you think of any? I sure can't name many that have dramatically impacted my thinking.
