We have used regular food from the pet store, but also contacted the Extension office of Texas A&M university. They provided a great deal of information free of charge.

Hummingbirds are attracted to many flowering plants—shrimp plants, Heliconia, bromeliads, verbenas, fuchsias, many penstemons—especially those with red flowers. They feed on the nectar of these plants and are important pollinators, especially of deep-throated flowers. Most species of hummingbird also take insects, especially when feeding young.
Thats why using a red or close to red bird feeder will attract moor humming birds to a new area.

Don't worry they will find it. You do not need to add any red coloring...just use sugar and water: 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. The mix they sell in stores in not good for them, the coloring in it is bad for the bird.

they love sugar water you don't have to color it because usually the container is red or yellow to attract them to it. But sugar water is what they love very much
