A router needs to be connected to the Internet by a modem. Once it is, any computer can be connected to the router without using a modem. You just use the Ethernet port. *None* of the computers connected to the router need to have a modem, as long as the *router* is connected to a modem.

No it means you can split the modem connection. If you don't have a modem you can't connect to the internet. But the modem can be in another room and you can still be connected to it by using the router.

Considering the whole network a "set"; that is, for example, every computer and network components in your home.

In this set, you MUST have a modem or gateway. Or else, there is nothing to connect to the Internet.

However, you just need one, though. Then, you can connect it to your router. Then, the router can share that connection from the modem/gateway to all your computers that are connected to the router, wired or wireless.

So, you must need a modem/gateway in this "set". However, that's it; you don't need to have every computer to be installed a modem.

Yes, you can share an internet connection when only one of the computers has a modem in it. WindowsXP has a very easy to use wizard for sharing internet connections.

you would still need a broadband modem such as cable internet or DSL to hook the router up to, then each computer will need an ethernet card or port built into the motherboard, but you won't need a dial up modem in any of the computers hooked up to the router

If you can tap in to a neighbors wireless connection, then you dont need a modem.

To connect to your own connection, there must be some sort of modem.

P.S. stealing your neighbors connection is a great thing to do lol.
