You should definitely live in the college dorm in your first year, unless you have strong reason why not (for example, too much a financial burden).
Living in the dorm is one of the most important college experience, so you should not miss it out.
After living in the dorm for a year, though, you are free to choose how to live, whether commute, apartment or dorm again.

When I was a student, I had done both. I lived in a number of different dorms, some I liked, others I didn't. It's strictly a personal choice as to whether to live on campus or commute.
Living on campus is a way to be independent from mom and dad, but then again, it's pretty easy to get distracted and party all the time. Some people take it seriously, while others love to party. And if you go to a really big school, then temptation is all around.
Commuting from home is a way to save money on housing and have a place that's more peaceful and quiet, but then again you're living under mom and dad's roof.
I never did this, but I did have my own off campus apartment and commuted in. Why? I wanted more independence and quiet.
Which way to go is up to you! The main thing is to focus on your studies and do the best you can. That's far more important than where to live.

Neither. The best is to have your own apartment where there can be less distractions than dorms or home. Use the money spent on a dorm room to rent instead. I disliked living in a dorm. In my own apartment I could study well but also used the library at school.

I would prefer to live neither with my parents or in a dorm.
The dorms are WAYYY too expensive here (5 grand up front!) and they look like TINY hotel rooms! There's no college close enough that I'd be willing to attend around here anyways.
So I'd like to live on my own. :b
Most people around here live in apartments with roommates anyways because a bachelor apartment is like $500+ (for bachelor and like $700+ for 1 bedroom) and that's without cable, phone, internet, utilities, food, anything else that you need, want, gotta have.

Do you mean commute to college from home everyday or take college courses online from home? Either way, I opted to live in the dorms until I could afford an apartment. Living with my family was not conducive to studying.

Home! For sure. It is much cheaper, you have so much more space, usually your own rules (if your parents let you do what you want), and its not loud and annoying at times when you don't want to participate in their crap or try to sleep in late.
