Will the schools that are on the common app look down on your application if you use it instead of using their own? Will it affect the chances to be admitted?

Most schools that use the common application also have additional, school-specific materials that applicants MUST complete.

If you are looking at a school that specifically says on its website that it does NOT have additional, school-specific materials besides the common application, and gives you a CHOICE between its own application and the common application, then the common application will be sufficient in every way, and your candidacy will be given the same consideration as all others.

Just look at that college's website carefully to see whether additional materials are necessary.

College's that accept the Common application condone it, and it is the only application that an increasing number of school's accept. Bennington College, for example, is one selective school that has recently made this change. According to organization's official website, the application, which can be sent to many schools at the same time, leaves a student more time for "college research, visits, essay writing, and senior year coursework." The same site says that the application is meant for schools with a "holistic selection process", i.e. schools that accept student based on objective as well as subjective criteria.

A school that uses the application will not (or should not, according to the organization) use the application as the sole indicator of whether a student should be admitted.
