all because they run inthe back ground and take every effort to get rid of they eat memory like there is no tomorrow. Best to reload and never use them again

'Slow down' isn't really the correct spin on this question. Rather, it uses CPU clock-cycles.
The computer still runs at the same speed after installing Norton products as it does before installing them.
But Norton products (and any 'protective' software that runs 'in the background') uses up some CPU cycles while performing its duties.
Thus, your other software is bound to seem to run more slowly.
If you have a snazzy new zippy CPU and lots of RAM, then the usage of the CPU cycles may not be noteworthy or attention-grabbing. But, if you have a system that is already heavy-laden because its CPU is somewhat lacking in the tick-tock department, you will, naturally, notice the degradation in performance.

In real simple, non-technical terms, Norton is a hard drive and speed hog. It's got one of the largest requirements for disk space and whether it's running in the background or in another room (just a joke - in another room!) it is using up resources other progams need to run at optimum speed.
