As the first answer suggests, its model permitted much lower prices and creates jobs not only within Wal-mart, but countless jobs within the industry as well.
Those who will complain that it destroyed small business naively overlook that consumers put more value on cost than shopping environment. If all those small businesses who lost out because they couldn't compete were so much better, consumers would have never left. Consumers have spoken and value lower costing items, period.

Wal-Mart is proof that capitalism alone does not work. Wal-Mart is close enough to a monopoly, which destroys small business, and in turn reduces prices for goods for consumers based on there un-matched purchasing ability. What difference would it make if Wal-Mart was government owned. Do you really think Wal-Mart owners are any more trust worthy then government bureaucrats. There are obvious good sides and bad sides. Yes it creates many jobs, but eventually will Wal-Mart take over all aspects of the consumable products, and services. Can you imagine the majority of the country all working for Wal-Mart @ $6 per hour. That is an extreme example, but is possible on a slightly smaller scale.

Wal-Mart has created millions of jobs that wouldn't exist otherwise. Through their purchasing power, they have lowered the prices of almost all products, allowing lower income individuals to purchase things they couldn't before. By creating more buying, they're generating greater demand for products which creates more jobs elsewhere. The additional purchasing also creates more sales tax money and income tax money.

WalMart did more to keep inflation under control than Greenspan ever did.
It also opened up the Chinese manufacturing to the American markets in a scale never dreamed of.
