Someone earlier asked, "who is the worst writer ever?" I think the better question is this. A very hard one to answer. I'm partial to Beckett, since I just finished an in-depth class. Besides, it's his 100th birthday. A lot of you will argue Shakespeare, but be prepared to support your position. Remember, like JK Rowlings, he borrowed for his stories, too.

The problem with this kind of question is that it's totally subjective. I happen to think Isaac Asimov ranks among the best if not the very best, but that's just my opinion.

This question is very subjective. It all really depends on what you're into and what your beliefs are. Also, many of the great writers in history of which we are taught in school were or went crazy. EX:Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, William Shakespeare, some people claim even Mark Twain was crazy. My favorite cannot be limited to one because there is just too many different concepts to choose from.

By the way J.K. Rowlings is a woman.

J. W. Goethe for 'Faust'. I dont think there's a better book. So many sided, so deep and too shallow sometimes, witha happy ending but very cruel through all teh story, so different between 1st and 2nd parts. Including the best character ever - Mefistofel. A book about every1 and everything, about teh best german legend ever. Goethe devoted all his life for this masterpiece, and he was successful, so why he couldnt be the best writer ever?

John Steinbeck. He's better than Hemingway. His prose is tough, no nonsense. He doesn't waste words, and has a great understanding of the human condition.

Pick up 'East of Eden'. I've read it twice so far. I also have 'The Grapes of Wrath', 'The Pearl', 'The Red Pony', Of Mice and Men', 'Travels with Charley', and 'America and Americans'.
