In short, if you've got the money, go Lenovo, if not, go Dell. DO NOT BUY A SONY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

I have owned three computers so far, all Dells. The first two were laptops. The first one was so good, I bought a second Dell without even researching others. My experience with that was so bad, I vowed I'd never buy another Dell. When that laptop died, I decided to get a regular home PC. I researched them, and found out Dells had far fewer repairs in the first few years than other makes.

So, stupidly, I bought a Dell. Their customer service is so terrible that I would never buy a Dell again. I'd rather have to go through more repairs if I could just contact someone who had at least a slight idea of what was going on and could get the repair done....

For a laptop, personally, I don't think I'd go with IBM or HP either. I've had bad experiences with those brands when buying peripherals. There are other makers out there; check out all of them, find the latest Consumer Reports ratings for notebooks, and then make your decision.

But if you buy a Dell, I am certain you will regret it, sooner rather than later. They just will not listen to any customer who buys less than 1,000 computers at a time.

I have a basic Dell Inspiron 1200 for about a year now, and it had done all I asked of it. It was about $500.

I agree with Neither. Toshiba is the top of the line. Look at Acer for a best buy.
