Thank you for asking this question, I was going to do the same thing.
This just shows how off balance is the reward scale in the western society. Also in the same category are CEOs that are paid huge amounts of money and they're actually bad at their job (see Michael Ovitz among many others).
The entertainment companies are complaining about piracy and how they're not making money, but they grossly overpay a lot of people (including artists) and pay a lot for commecrials that nowbody watch. I guess it all has to start at the end consumer. I know I'm not buying any CD that's over 14$, I don't go to the movies and I rarely rent. It's true I use pirated material but I don't feel bad. If they would bring the prices down I would be able to buy all the music and movies I want. Not to mention that a PPV movie or On Demand costs the same as a rental when clearly costs less to distribute.

Basic economics. Supply and demand dictates the higher salaries. When people buy gossip magazines, tune into certain television shows, buy tickets or even click on ads on celebrity sites, they are contributing to that celebrity status. The saddest part is people work really hard to buy the things celebrities are wearing and/or endorsing and usually the celebrity does not have to pay for it. It's just a marketing tactic to sell to the public who will race out to get whatever the latest fad is. It's a never-ending cycle and, no, they certainly don't work harder than teachers, fire-fighters and other people who actually make society function.

You are totally correct to question this stupidity on our part for supporting such stuff.

Unfortunately, there is almost automatic prosperity in athletics because most stadiums are built by the taxpayers, not the owners. Then they get all kinds of rights to use of the facility, and make big bucks off the poor. Then they can afford to pay these oversized babies big bucks.

A person is worth whateve he/she can get people to pay him/her. IF an athlete or actor can get the money, then that is what they are worth.

When you consider that a star actor/actress can sell $100 million in tickets in a weekend, they must be worth something.

(And if you have never been on stage or in a movie, it is hard work)
