I buy a gown from the thrift store every year for prom, and usually end up altering the gown in some way to make it fit my body type and taste better. This year, I've been thinking about maybe making my own dress from scratch. I'm open to anything, and was wondering if anyone knew of a good pattern, or had a suggestion for what fabrics or construction techniques I should try. THANKS!

Fabric stores sell patterns. Or you could combine the top of one thrift store dress with the bottom of another. You could become a fashion designer.

there is nothing wrong with a thrift store. i think you should buy a prom dress from the thrift store ( i know they are really cheap) just in case you are not happy with what you have made. otherwise go for it! if you make it it will stand out from the others. a good place to buy fabrick is jo-anns. they have books you can follow and they have a lot of fabrick for prom dress type stuff. i think it is totally cool what you are doing. good luck!
