YES YES YES!!
I know you will get a lot of answers for this. I think it started back in the 1980's, when schools stopped 'failing' children because of 'self esteem' issues.
They thought it would hurt the childs feelings if they fail school, even though they didn't do the work right and failed anyway.
So now, these children will grow up and think it will not matter what they do. They will think their jobs will not care if they don't do their job right.
The state and federal test scores are failing miserably. And to top this off, most schools are NOT reporting the children's LOW test scores, just so they can get more funds from the government.
And schools just let the children who have poor test scores slide by, instead of helping them to do better in school.

The problem is not the education system. In fact for US students who are motivated and disciplined, they can compete with the best in the world. The problem is with the students and parents who are not motivated and not disciplined. If the student comes to the school unmotivated and undisciplined, what can the teacher and school do that the parent should have done and have more authority to do?
The big misconception is that the schools can discipline and motivate the student. Disciplining means that the student can choose the correct or right decisions. Parents do not give the schools/teachers the authority to do that. All the schools/teachers can do is show the students that there are rules and consequences. It is still up to the parent to teach the student what are the correct choices given those rules. All the schools/teachers can do is show the students the rewards of academic success, but the student still has to be motivated to want that success. The student discipline and motivation still has to come from the parents and students, which a higher percentage of US students do not have when they come to the classrooms.
I'm tired of parents blaming the schools for the failure of their own kids. The teachers in the US today are more educated and trained than teachers of the rest of the world. Instead of blaming the teachers, the parents need to support the teachers.
It is the lack of parental and student support that is driving teachers away from the profession. 50% of the teachers leave the profession in 5 years. Is that because they had perfect students that paid attention and gave them respect? Or the other way around? If the US students come to class motivated and disciplined, teaching would be one of the best profession, and we wouldn't be talking about how our education system is failing.
The reason we are saying the education system is failing is because the parents are failing their children and the students are failing themselves. So instead of admitting the blame on themselves, the parents and students are blaming the schools, and claiming to be victims of the big bureaucracy of the US education system.

AMEN,,,,, So True.
I spend a lot of time in my children's Elementary school as a Substitute, Parent Volunteer, PTO President, and a member of the SBDM committee. It Absolutely DISGUSTS me to see and hear what is going on in our schools. As would it to any parent who cares about their child's education. Our District is keeping parents in the dark about things that are happening (however I think a lot of the parents couldn't care less anyway). Just to let anyone who cares know, "One person can make a difference"!! I started writing letters to TEA, and our Superintendant, Director of Elementary Education, and anyone else who had some pull. We finally got 2 on campus Police Officers (for an elementary campus, isn't that awful), it seemed to cut down on the violence (gang representation), and drugs. Our country should be ASHAMED by what is going on in our schools... GREAT QUESTION, sorry I rambled.
