Many people share the belief that this could climax into a world war, being that Iran has the possiblity of having nuclear weapons and US troops are already in this general area. If the US gets involved, most likely the UN will too. Paranoia or reasonable cause and effect?

You are right to be concerned, but I think your perspective is a little off. Remember, one big root to this mess is that Israel is surrounded by enemies who want to kill them and wipe them off the map. That makes Israel like a wounded cat who is cornered. And so Israel one of the best fighting forces on earth, supplied & supported by the US.
The UN is worthless, don't expect anything from them, especially if they get involved. The fact that US troops are in Afganistan & Iraq is sorta immaterial.
I think that it could get more intense because it is the center of the world's oil supply, and everyone is addicted to oil nowadays, and the people in the US continue to buy and drive the big SUVs that have no mile-per-gallon standards. So any conflict in this region of the world causes problems and concerns in every developed country.

So far, the US has been quiet; they are doing the best thing. However, if Iran becomes involved, there will be hell to pay. Israel has shown that they are not afraid of the Islamic nations; the terrorists has made a grave mistake by meddling with Israel.

Possible, It would really depend on Iran, will they get involved and attack Israel for defending themselves against the terrorist Hezbollah (which is supported and armed by Iran and Syria)

Although it is a very frightening thought that this could escalate, it is very likely. World War? Probably not. Regional War? Most likely.
