they'll be ok for a day or 2 without food but put them in distilled H2O untill you can get water conditioner from the store. also, don't expect them to live too long...Fairs usually use feeder goldfish for those games and they usually don't make it past a week

I'm sure it was banned for fairs to give these as prizes
but you have them now so fill the tank with filtered water or let the water stand for 24hrs to let the chlorine leach out giving it a stir will help if you can, open the bags and stand them in the tank the fish should be ok until tomorrow as long as the tops are held open
then tomorrow release them into the tank
as for feeding the can wait till you get some fod fish can survive without food for weeks
an air pump and a filter for the tank would be a good idea with a weekly clean you hopefully will have fish that will survive
if not at least you will have tried
these fish can survive but you don't know how they were treated before your son won them
all the best with them

AHHHH- I can't believe people still do this. It is ughhh.
O.k. DO NOT feed them bread crumbs. You don't need to feed them at all really. Wait until you get proper fish food. In a balanced diet you should include veggies. Cooked zucchini, romaine lettuce, or shelled peas. It is not necessary right now- they probably won't eat anyways.
Goldfish- comets (what you have) get really big 12". They also live up to 40 years. They need at least ten gallons per fish right now and as they get larger they will need even more room, up to 40 gallons per fish. So your babies right now should be in a 30 gallon. If they do not have this room they will die. It might take a year or two but mother nature will balance things out. She will kill 2 of the fish so that the other can thrive. Most people who win fish from a fair don't care to hear this- so essentially the fair just signed their death sentence.
I would make a deal with your son- explain to him how big these fish get and that your tank is not big enough for them. You can bring them to a pet store to trade-in and get something more appropriate like danios. Or- he can save up his money for an adequate tank and filter for these fish.
If you are temporarily keep them in something too small then check your water conditions everyday. Your ammonia will get very high, very quick. You may have to change 25% of the water everyday or else it will become toxic.

goldfish will pretty much eat anything as long as it's small and swalloable. if you want the goldfish to live, put them in a small bowl for now with some distilled water. They should be ok not eating for a day. Prep the tank for a couple of days before you put your fish in. The net you have plenty of info on how to prep a tank for the fishes.

DO NOT GIVE THEM BREADCRUMBS, goldfish cannot digest yeast, they will be fine till tomorrow.Keep them in a good size tank with plenty of aeration & proper filtration,do a 25% water change at least once a week & in this weather keep an eye on the temperature, they are cold water fish but can tolerate slight fluctuations.

There is no need to try and feed the goldfish anything until tomorrow. Fish can live easily for a couple days without food, just becarful not to over feed tomorrow.

A couple of mashed up peas if they will eat it will do.
They will be ok for a few days but once you do get food don't make up for not feeding by giving them any extra as this will kill them.
Also don't keep them in a bowl they wont live for more than a week in there - has to be a decent sized tank with a filter.

The water smells undesirable because the tank isn't cycled and there is a huge number of waste from 3 goldies. they ought to quite be in a 30 + gallon tank with heavy filtration. Do 50% water alterations two times per week and make certain you've an highly sturdy filter out operating in this tank. Vacuum the gravel whenever you do a water substitute. in case you are able to it is larger to improve to a minimum of a 30 gallon tank and that is even going to be overstocked . in case you are able to get a previous filter out pad from a longtime tank to adhere into your filter out which will develop the cycle alongside and help....sturdy success.

Goldfish from the fair rarely live for more than a few days anyway, to trumatized by being bounced around and from thermal shock.
Their metabolisms are to slow for them to starve in a days time, they can wait.
