He was away seeing if anything was left of Krypton for 5 years
He didnt look too weak when he picked up the island at the end
Maybe he was trying not to break the plane, was it weakness or trying to be careful enough. He was holding it by the tip trying not to cause it to callapse

The answer I recently saw on the A & E special alluded to the fact that he'd been away from Earth's yellow sun for five years and hadn't fully "recharged", so to speak.
The other answer is "It's more dramatic if he has to struggle."
