I take two 1,000 mg. gel caps a day, and the only side effect I have noted it sometimes I can taste the garlic when the capsules dissolve. If it happens right when I'm brushing my teeth, the combination with the mint of the toothpaste is pretty yucky.
But it would take more garlic than you could possibly take in a capsule form to hurt you. Very large amounts of garlic are used, both raw and cooked, in many different kinds of foods. As I understand it, it is good for a variety of things that can go wrong with your digestion. If you like the flavor in your food, that is probably easier and better than capsules, but both are good for you.

Odorless garlic tablets or garlic oil capsules are OK but if you take too many the garlic can desynchronize your brain waves so pilots are not allowed to consume any garlic for 72 hours before a flight.
