Gerbils are both nocturnal and diurnal(day-active). Anyone who has kept many gerbils or has bred them for a few generations, knows that they have a tendancy to switch back and forth, though usually primarily nocturnal. I have noticed that they can adapt their active times to mostly match the general activity around the cage... if it tends to stay consistant. It is interesting to note that some books claim that they are almost exclusively nocturnal, and others say that they are about half and half. Each's experience will be a little different. I have even had gerbils that are one way when they are younger and then change later for no obvious reason.

not necessarily: they are active during day and night.
originally desert creatures, they live (in their natural habitat) in burrows under the ground. so they crawl around and burrow all day and night.
