I don't think that it's necessarily bad... If you were physically hurt by the person and didn't trust them not to hurt you if you break up in person, I think it's probably a better way. Another example where it might be better is if it's a very long distance relationship. It would seem terrible to have either person have to make the long trip to visit in person just to break up and go home. In most situations, though, I think it's best to do it in person. Over the phone seems more impersonal and, in my opinion, hurts worse. Even if the person has hurt you, I don't think it's right to do something intentionally hurtful back to them unless you really don't have another way to safely handle the situation.

My personal answer would have to be "NO"...because in some bad relationships, such a break-up may even be neccessary. If the person has been treating you badly or, even worse, "abusively", then it may certainly be neccessary. If you are being treated badly (but only YOU know HOW badly), it might even be "safer" for you stay away from the other person during an actual break-up...especially if you are the woman. Do what you HAVE to do, and, I say "very good luck to you".

Think about it this way- if they refuse to break up with you and you're on the phone with them, you can hang up on them and then ignore them.

Hey, if that's what it comes to, that's what it comes to. If this guy has been giving me crap for the past however-long, I do not owe him my presence. As long as it is clear that the relationship is over, you're fine.
