If you are from the United States you do not need a visa to enter Mexico.

You are issued a tourist visa on the plane that is good for 30 to 180 days - usually 30 if you fly. If your connection is leaving Mexico you need to turn in the VISA when boarding the next plane.

Once you get to Mexico or sometimes even before you land they give you a one week(7 day) "permit" to be in Mexico. You have to state where you're going where you're from how much money you have etc. When you get inside the airport they will send you to immigration and you will be "stamped" (approved) for a weeks stay. Keep in mind you will need this permit even if going to a different gate. So you should be fine. Best thing to do is call the airport or airline and find out.

You only need the 180 permit if you are staying longer than seven days. Which you said you weren't.
