It can heiten the emotions that a person feels during a scene.
Alfred Hitchcock used lots of music in his movies and he said himself that some of his music added a 30% increase of emotion to the scene. His movie Psycho is a great example of this.

Music is so important because it sets the mood for the movie, it adds more than just the voices. Think of it as a world with no sound effects. They add life to the world.

Music adds to whatever is going on and keeps the viewer focused on the movie. When I watch a movie and there's no background music I usually find it pretty boring and I tend to advert my attention to something else.

Several reasons. Sometime sit sets the tone or mood. It fills the void when there is no dialog.
It enhances the dialog sometimes.
In some horror movies, they would not be even scary without the music.
Do I need to go on.
Movies would suck without music.
