We made the trip to California on I10 from Texas a few years ago. If you aren't interested in desert... don't go that way. Try I40 instead. You will see more trees and it looks more alive. You will be very near The Grand Canyon that way. On I 10 We visited the Guadalupe Mountains NP. We stopped at Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. It was a disappointment. The large cave has had some many people trample through it that the formations are mostly dead. We did enjoy the bat flight. Then we stopped at Bisbee Arizona, copper mine and S. King's desperation was just filmed there. We visited the OK Coral and saw a lot of cowboy history there. That was basically it. We called it death road. Don't plan on doing anything at night. Everything closes up pretty early there. You will see tons of cactus and tumble weeds. Plan on being roasted because it will be HOT at that time of year.

One stop will be El Paso on the West Texas Tip, bordering Mexico and New Mexico. Before you reach El Paso, the driving will be nothing but desert for 8 hours. Don't speed in Midland or Odessa areas, Sherrif Coltrain hick is waitin with radar and you don't want to appear in front of Boss Hog.
When entering EL Paso, drive all the way to westside to find a place to stay. The sunsets are spectacular. Exit Sunland Park drive and take a left for some hotels. Their is a Casino at the race track with a buffet. Juarez, Mexico is easy to access from where you are. The border highway (aka Paisano drive), is right next to those hotels and takes you directly to Juarez, if you like to drink Tequila and or Tecate, this is the place.
And after that, there is nothing else to do. El Paso is known for it's hospitality and great authentic Mexican food. A few places are noted to have some good Mexican food. Drive up Sunland Park Drive toward the Franklin Mountains (southern most tip of the Rockies) when you get to Mesa take a right. You'll drive down to the 4117 block and you'll find Taco Grill, great prices for awesome food. Next door is the Kings X, more Mexican food with sports bar.
Good Luck

frequently conversing a protracted holiday in a vehicle is greater effective than the comparable distance temporarily runs. The engine is often as much as temperature so much less positioned on and the gasoline monetary gadget would be greater effective. Get the vehicle to a useful cruising speed and simplicity the throttle off very slowly on point going until eventually it basically starts to loose highway speed and carry it there; it is named throttle feathering and would save you lots of gasoline. There is six flags in Houston, the river walk in San Antonio, and Joshua tree national park. You can also take a detour up to the Grand canyon.

Geez, Interstate 10 is BORING.
Try going a little further north along Interstate 40.
