The simplest, and the safest, way is to spray the ants with a mixture of dish soap and water (1 part dish soap: 10 parts water). This will kill the ants you spray on contact. Leave the dead ants there; other members of the colony will come to retrieve the bodies. You probably will have to do this for a week or so, but eventually the ants will give up as their numbers are depleted and go elsewhere.

No such thing, even common house hold chemicals are toxic. You either squish them one at a time or use a chemical. Spraying everything with a mild bleach solution drives the away for a week or so, ants apparently don't like the chlorine in the bleach. Do be careful using bleach as it can stain or ruin trim and things. The advantage of using bleach every two weeks to keep the ants out of the kitchen and bath is it disinfects everything too.

Old age will kill the ant. I'd use a baseball bat on the kid but if you only want to kill one of them which do you choose.

I have heard that red pepper works really well. Sprinkle it where they normally are or on entry ways and cracks. When they eat it, it kills them. It won't harm your children either!
