Obviously it depends on the opponent.
If I have an intruder coming through my window, I take him out with a single pistol shot... well I'd unload on him but anyways....
If our country has been attacked by all of Asia and we are dieing left and right... and the only way to stop it is to nuke em.. then so be it.
Not sure what you are asking between the lines... but my bottom line is that for me, either way, using weapons/force is a last resort for self defense only.

It would depend on the task that was presented. You can miss with a pistol, but you chances are much greater with a nuclear bomb.
For close in work, a good shotgun is hard too beat.
