The difference is the speed or BPM, trance, for the most part, has a slower BPM than techno does, and trance has many levels of sound while techno doesn't.

To me Trance electronica features more ambient sounds, and a slower pace. Techno is way more busy.

But, as Static-X says, "The Trance Is The Motion." I'm not sure what that means, but Wayne Static can't be wrong. =)

Trance is more fluid and conjunct, Techno is solid and disjunct. The BPM in trance is generally is slower than techno and techno lyrics generally have more "party" or "shoutout" lyrical content where trance has more love or lust type lyrical content.
