A trick I use for blocking alot of the ad's I see on websites is using my HOST file. The host file is a file that your computer looks at before it contacts your ISP's DNS server to find out the IP# of the website.

On Win2k/XP it is located under C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
On other versions, I believe its c:\windows

You can simply open this file called HOSTS (no extension) with notepad.

Example, ads.doubleclick.net has a lot of ads across the internet.

I added this entry:
127.0.0.1 ads.doubleclick.net

127.0.0.1 is a loopback IP# that tells it to look at your own computer.

So now whenever theres an ad thats suppose to show on a web page, that originates from ads.doubleclick.net , it will show the page not found or broken image instead in the ad area.

What is basically happening is the HOSTS files is saying that it should look on your own computer (127.0.0.1) for a website called ads.doubleclick.net. Of course your computer is not the server, not does it have any files for that website, so thus it returns nothing.

My kids used to go to this website and download these simple games that caused problems on the computer.

I simply added:
127.0.0.1 website.com
127.0.0.1 www.website.com

Now when they go to this website, it shows a DNS error, page can not be displayed thing.

Yes, you should have two entries, one with www and one without.
Because if the person types http://website.com then it will look at the first entry above. If they type http://www.website.com then it uses the 2nd one and won't even see the first entry.

The correct format for editing your host files is IP# one or more spaces and then the domain name.

Adding a # is like a comment tag and will be ignored.
So lets say you have these entries:
127.0.0.1 website.com
127.0.0.1 www.website.com

If I want to temporarily visit the site again, then I can disable it by adding a comment:

#127.0.0.1 website.com
#127.0.0.1 www.website.com

Now those entries are ignored. To re-enable, simply remove the # signs.

One last note, whenever you make a change to the HOSTS file, you will have to close all of your web browers pages and restart the brower.
