My 13 yo daughter is interested in skateboarding, I know NOTHING aobut it and do not see many people around here that skate. Does anyone know of any good videos or resources that I might get for her to teach her the basics - she is not looking to doing all kinds of tricks right now- but she does want to be able to get around and have a little bit of skill on one. I am thinking of getting her a board for Christmas but I want to get her something instructional to help her know what to do with it once she gets it- what are the best resources available??

Skateboarding can be a lot of fun. As every sport, it can also be dangerous if you do not train correctly. Girls who took gymnastics are excellent skateboarders because they have good balance.

Many cities offer skateboarding classes. Make certain she gets trained.

Safety equipment is important. Helmet, knee pads, etc. If she or her friends laugh at the safety equipment then she isn't mature enough to skateboard. It takes responsibility.

Also, a skateboard isn't a vehicle to be used to get around town. The streets and sidewalks are unsafe. Only play in a skateboard park.

find people who do know about skateboarding, find the nearest skate park and take her there. Get her a skateboard. Alot of kids start out just teaching themselves the basics on their own sidewalk.

Tony Hawks puts out a lot of instructional DVDs you might check your library or Amazon. Also kids need helmets and elbow and knee pads even if they think they are not cool.. Too bad so sad let them cry to their dad.

You could probably offer one of the kids around town some money to teach her how to get started.
