I have charter internet, which comes w/free spyware/virus protection. Something isn't right. My PC has started going VERY slow. Sometime Internet Explorer will shut down for no reason. Programs won't respond. I've done virus scans, no viruses found. I've done spyware scans & everytime I do one, it seems to find "malware from "clickspring" in my windows/system32/N?lookup.exe folder. Everytime I reboot, I get a message that a virus was found "trojan downloader" in my win32.purityscan folder. Sometimes, while surfing the net, my charter virus/spyware protection icon gets an X over it & says there's a malfuction in it & I have to reboot before it works again. I've used disk cleanup, defrag, several virus & spyware scans. I've deleted programs (I keep getting the message that I'm running low on virtual memory as well). I have a lot of important things on this computer & can't afford to lose them (& cnt afford to pay 2 hv it looked @). What cld be wrong & how cld I try 2 fix it?

If you try every option and have no luck, you may have to reinstall your operating system.

Use the disks that came with you computer to reload your operating system.
1.Make sure you can reload all programs you paid for. (ex: Photoshop)
2.Go to your XP help and print out re-format instructions.
3.Backup files.(ex: photos, music)
4.Re-format.
5.Download XP updates. This may take 2 or more hours. (high speed)
6.Then load antivirus, antispy, etc.
7.Load all other stuff.
Good luck. You'll be glad you did it.

If all else fails you can always reformat, but I'd advise holding off on that drastic measure.
Instead, first go to the system restore utility and shut system restore off. This will remove all past restore points. Then, reboot and use F8 by tapping it to boot into "Safe Mode". When you are in Windows Safe Mode, then run your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs. Hopefully this will remove the "bugs" that are in your system. Once all of those procedures are done, reboot in a regular manner. If all is working correctly, go back to System Restore and turn that function back on again. Good luck.

don't know a lot.
but... this is why you need back up files on disc, keeping anything you can't stand to lose. Trojan is the name of various "mutating" viruses put out there. Anti-viral services and programs try to keep up, and if this is new they will have software to detect/eliminate it...but if you're already infected...
Chances are you need a re-install. You can try saving the information you need if its' word type data on disc. Than reload after re-installing programming. Do you have re-installation files/discs? If you have HP system, call them at customer service and buy them. They are set to machines serial number and can't be shared, but they're pretty affordable.
good luck.
peace

Computer Slow

Download and then run startup.exe at:

http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......

Can't live without it and windows...

Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.

Other things to try:

1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)
