"lol" is the laugh track of the medium of computer. Just like in bad sit-coms where they put it in because nothing is really funny and people need to be prompted to laugh at the un-funniness, it's the same thing on the computer. Someone puts in a decidedly un funny remark, knows it and tries to save it with a "lol". It's like the emperor's new clothes we see it for what it is.
