I had my third ultrasound performed because the dr. said I was not measuring far enough for how far along I am. I am 29 weeks and 5 days pregnant. He said it may be because I am not gaining enough weight. I have gained 18 lbs overall. He said I should stay off my feet and rest a little more.I also need to take in 300 more calories then what I have been. My daughter weighs 2 lbs 9 oz. Is this something I should worry about or is it normal?

Sounds like you have a good doctor. Another question...do you smoke. Smoking is known to cause low birth weight. And, maybe you just have a small baby. I wish you and your baby the best of luck.........

I think doctors are so use to seeing huge babies these days that sometimes they forget small if okay. 18 pounds at this point doesn't sound like a problem to me. Doctors usually want you to gain around 20-25 over the entire pregnancy and trust me at the end you will start putting on the weight and so will the baby. Your baby will start to put on anywhere from 1/2 - 3/4 a week in the last 4-5 weeks of pregnancy. Also remember that ultra sounds can be off by around 9 oz. Recently a friend of mine at a child and the doctors were talking about inducing her because they thought it was going to be over 9 pounds .. the baby was 6 lbs and ? oz when it was born. My cousin was told her son would be around 7 pounds, she ended up with a 9 lb 6 oz baby. Just a few examples of how an ultrasound can be wrong.

By no means am I saying don't listen to your doctor, I am just saying don't stress yourself, it sounds like you and your baby are fine otherwise the doctor would be running a whole battery of tests.

Also I just checked a number of on line sites and my own pregnancy books and they all say that at 30-34 weeks the baby should weigh 3 -6.5 lbs and at 21-25 the baby sound weight 1-2 lbs. So you sound right on target to me. I would talk to your doctor again and she if he she has any other concerns.

CONGRATS.

BTW ... Something two different OB's told me was that I should continue to eat for one and add about 1 glass of milk extra to my calorie load so if you are doing that then you are gaining just as you should. Trust me it's better than gaining too much :), I gained 50 with my first (lost it all plus a couple), gained 45 with my second which I still haven't lost so now with my third I am over weight and hope that I can only gain 20 lbs it's much easier on your body to keep you weight down during pregnancy.

I think that you will be ok. I know that they say this far along your baby should weigh about 3 pounds and your pretty close to that so I really wouldnt worry. I would do what your doctor tells you and make sure Im eating good and still taking vitamins and stay off your feet. Women actually only need to gain 15 pounds to have a normal pregnancy so dont think anything of it. I am actually overweight and my doctor only wanted me to gain 15 pounds becasue if I gained to much then it could cause the baby to be born early Im 37 week (9 months) and everything is going fine, at 37 weeks your baby is actually ready to live outside the womb so Im feeling much better now that Ive made it to were I need to be to have healthy baby. I gained way more then what I was told and I really tried not too so each time I went to the doctors and they said I need to watch it, I became pretty depressed becasue I was trying. So if you are atleast 15 pounds more I think you will be fine. Everything your doctor is telling you also adds up to what Ive read also if you plan to breast feed they say after you have the baby you have to take 200 more calories so you need to total 500 calories more then normal. I know you are far along but if you can I would get the what to expect when your expecting book.....I read each month as I go into that month and it really has helped me. I usally dont care for doctors so Im able to read the book along with what the doctors tell me and it makes me feel like everything my doctor say is pretty much normal. So good luck and relax you seem to be doing just fine.

Ultrasounds are not very accurate when it comes to calculate the baby's weight. Usually is take or give a pound. My Dr. said that my son was gonna be probably 6 to 61/2 lbs at birth, because I wasn't gaining so much weight (19 lbs for the whole pregnancy). He couldn't be more wrong, my baby was a 8lbs 2 oz little man and very, very healthy for the grace of God. Good luck with your pregnancy and God bless!

I dont think u should worry too much, im 9 months pregnant and ive only gained about 19 lbs. The doc said the same thing to me because i didnt start showing until i was 7months. I just ate normal throughout my pregnancy, i never ate for 2 !!! I wasnt getting enough calories in either, and I wasnt gonna force myself to eat if i wasnt hungry so he just recommended that i eat foods with more calories in them or to drink Ensure for a while. The doc says im fine, baby's fine.

Wow you are lucky to have a doctor keeping you off your feet like that! I gained 15 pounds total during my whole pregnancy and no one told me to take it easy! te only reason you should worry is if the doctor told you that there was something abnormal. When he told you the babies wieght he wouldve mentioned certain risks that you and your baby could be suceptable to...did he?
