Wow, have I been there. The truth is the simplest and easiest. The age of the children is always an issue, as is the "relationship" you have with the other person. Do the children know and respect the other person and your relationship with them. Is this a hetero or homosexual partnership? In any event simply telling the children you have Good Happy feelings of affection for the other person, and this is the way you show that, should suffice. Don't try to make like you weren't "caught" be cause then you breed distrust. A warm embrace of the child by both parties is reassuring and much less offensive, than a door slammed in their face. Be careful using the word "love" though because the love for a child is far different than the love you are displaying for each other.
