a point has no dimensions, a line has one dimension that can be measured with a ruler, a plane has two dimensions and we measure it in square units, space has three dimension and we measure it in cubic units. I don't think the dimensions are ordered, so they can't be described as first, second or third.
When people refer to the 4th dimension they mean time.
These are the dimensions that we humans perceive. It maybe that there are more. I have heard that the forces and particles of physics may be regarded as dimensions, but am not sure what that means in practical terms.

For example, holograms are three dimensional pictures placed on a two dimensional surface, which gives the image a curvature when the observer moves. Similarly, in general relativity, the fourth dimension is manifested in observable three dimensions as the curvature of path of a moving infinitesimal (test) particle. 't Hooft has speculated that the fifth dimension is really the spacetime fabric.

No offence meant, but this is a rather straight-forward kind of answer. Before answering this question, could you honestly think what the second dimension is? I mean, those three dimensions which we take in everyday mathematics is length, breadth and height and thus we think there are three dimensions. But if examined closely, all of them are measurements taken along a straight line with the help of some sort of scale. This common feature makes this the one and the first dimension, which is called space.
The second dimension is still a controversy but die-hard, wannabe time-travellers are ready to accept time as the second dimension. And the third dimension, I think that humanity is very very far from realizing it scientifically whatever it is. So, what was the question again?

Three Dimensions describe the world that we can touch as every thing must have these dimensions in order to exist.
When we travel we become moving masses. The fact that we are moving we exhibit energy which is a spacial phenomena. However , not a dimension but a quantity is involved in the motion and that quantity iscalled Time. Then there is direction of the motion;this is called angle. Of course our own mass is really a quantity and is not a dimension.
Therefore we have the dimensions of space measured as a quantity called meter(International standard Unit) then we have a quantity called mass measured in kilograms,Direction is measured by a quantity called angle in degrees and finally a long quantity called time measured in second,
In sumation in the physical Universe we have four quantities and three dimensions.
The Greeks asisgned great importance to geometry especially the circle but it is the three dimensional circle called sphere that takes the Prize because it represent the most efficient shape in the three dimensional world.
This is the world we live in.
Anything else which would exist in diferent dimension would be beyond the scope of our Understanding.

Dimension one would be literally a dot on a flat piece of paper. Dimension two would be a line on a piece of paper still flat, and Dimension three would be a box represented in space.
Dimension one Length
Dimension two Width
Dimension three Depth

if you take the normal conventions:
1st - Length
2nd- Width
3rd- Height/Depth
You could actually choose any of these three to be the answer.
To michael, 1 dimension would be the line on the paper. 2 would be 2 lines on the paper. a single point would have no dimensions. Think about it, how could you have length if you only have a point? :)

The 3rd dimension is whichever one that is orthogonal to the other two.
Take your right hand and pretend like it's a gun. Now, while keeping your index finger and thumb where they are, extend your middle finger straight. These three fingers of your hand (index, thumb, and middle finger) can represent a coordinate system to describe 3 dimensional space (often called, X, Y, and Z).

Seven dimensions, all known by sailors for centuries.
surge (front back)
heave (up down)
sway (side to side)
pitch (rotation that makes the bow go up and down)
roll (rotation about the centreline of the ship)
yaw (rotation about the mast)
and time. Sailors were obsessed by clocks centuries before anyone else.
All objects travel and move in these seven dimensions.

the third dimension is the one that allows people to see depth. this is the dimension that we see in. the 4th dimension is space/time, and the 2nd is like a shape like a square. but 3D is like a cube.
