Gmail is the free email service provided by Google.

You do NOT need to be invited to get a Gmail account. If you have a cell phone (or have a willing friend who does), you can simply sign up using your mobile phone.

You can sign up for it at www.google.com. Click the "more>>" link above the search box ... the gmail link will appear on the right side.

After you click the Gmail link mentioned above, Click the link that says "Sign up for Gmail using your mobile phone."

You will provide the mobile phone number (note that you have an option to keep or not keep that number stored in Google -- I always opt to not store such information).

Google will simply send a short text message with your activation code to your number and you then use that to complete your login information and obtain your account.
It's that simple.

Note that GMAIL mobile activation only works in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, The Phillipines, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States.

* Note that the mobile phone option is not available in all countries.

If you don't a mobile phone or have access to a friend with a mobile phone (that accepts text messages), you will need an invitation from a current user.
