Koi on La Cienaga is a real scene ($$$$, celebrities) and the food is supposed to be good. Lucques on Melrose is generally regarded as excellent. The Ivy (on Robertson), Joe's on Abbot Kinney, Water Grill downtown LA, Providence on Melrose. Those are all expensive though. For cheaper good places, try Fritto Misto in Santa Monica, Ginger Grass in Silverlake, Da Gianino's in Silverlake, Puran's on La Brea (great date place).
