If you will be teaching in a high school, then mostly likely you will be teaching American History. If you will be teaching the upper classes, then, you may be able to teach a European history class or perhaps Latin American history as well.
I taught history in grade school and high school (late 70s, early 80s). So, the curriculum may have changed in the past 20-25 years.
You can do a lot with American history. Not just lecture and discussion.

Hello Monica!
Sorry to say, but I do not consider as History the history of the USA, since it is so short!
Most likely an depending on the issues you are mostly interested, you could concentrate in Western History of the subject you love! You will find out that is has started more than 5,000 years ago, somewhere in Greece and spread throughout East and West, mainly through the colonies Greeks had established all over the Globe (from Asia to America, from North Pole to Africa!)

Well, most history teachers teach political history. But there are other historical facts out there, that nobody teaches. SO how about teaching non political history, such as The Gun Fight At OK Corrall and the rest o fthe 19th century?

The one I enjoyed the most was in the 11th grade.
I took a history class on the State of California.
Since my family was there before California became a territory, I was interested in all I could learn.
And I have since moved on to more of my family history.
No one was ever published, but they wrote letters and had they names and activities published by some newspapers of the time.
Thank you for the memories!

you will probably have a cirriculum to follow unless you are teaching college and you can be more specific. if you love it all, intice the children to love it also. i had one good history teacher. we were always doing something and learning the world along the way. it wasnt boring for one minute. and i am not a lover of history as yourself.
the point is not what you teach it is how you teach be ready for anything

european from french revolution to the end of cold war. Not only very interesting, but also very necessary as the events which had the biggest influence on the world happened then. Its a must for any starting politician! You cant be one if you dont understand this period of history.

I personally enjoyed, ancient history, Roman/Greek mythology. Aztecan religion and beliefs, history of Atlantis, Egyptian myths/ beliefs/agriculture well basically Egyptian anything. You can have real fun with it and let your imagination take over, because no one knows the whole truth about these ancient civilizations. I hope that helped some.

World history seems good because your students get a "sample" of different cultures from around the world....from the U.S. to Europe to Asia...and back.
