The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* The Restaurant Business Start-up Guide by Paul Daniels
* Restaurants That Work: Case Studies of the Best in the Industry by Martin E. Dorf
* Restaurant Financial Basics by Raymond S. Schmidgall
* Opening a Restaurant or Other Food Business Starter Kit: How to Prepare a Restaurant Business Plan and Feasibility Study by Sharon Fullen
* Upstart Guide Owning & Managing a Restaurant by Roy S. Alonzo
* The Restaurant Managers Handbook: How to Set Up, Operate, and Manage a Financially Successful Food Service Operation by Douglas Robert Brown

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

It costs a bundle. Hopefully, you can find an existing commercial kitchen available, so you don't have to start from scratch.

Most new restaurants fail in the first year. Be prepared to have virtually no social life, at least while you're starting it up, and work 16 hours a day.

A restaurant is a money pit, so much money to get started and a lot of work involved. You can do it cheap but I'm guessing your talking about a decent sit down restaurant........I almost bought a small walk up restaurant next to the bus line and across from a hospital but, its just wouldve taken up more time than it was worth.

your kitchen will be the most expensive..depening on your food you want to serve. id say a cost on a restaurant kitchen would be about 5-10K...

you need health permits, permits to do business...i think theres others but i forget what else...

you could get financing through local banks...credit unions...

im not sure what you mean by graded? but id think itd be on your choice of cuisine..and how you prepare and present it.

restaurants are low margin businesses with high start-up costs. if you have about $500k in cash, you can make a go of it. if you do, and you are anywhere near NYC, send me an email. i'm looking for business partners now.

LOCATION, Cuisine, and Customer base. See your local BBB for more info, and city hall will tell you all about local laws.

that the success rate is low, so just do it for the experience. half of the new restaurants close in one year, 75% is closed in two.

Make sure you get very good location, remember opening a restaurant is a very risky thing. You need to advertise it, and again make sure they location is very very good, if its not forget it. When you open it, spend a lot on advertisement. Don't worry about the grading until you open.
