In third world countries? Probably not.

The question is, do people in the USA understand the concept of homosexuality?

Probably not.

Far too many people still think it's a lifestyle, a free choice, a take-it-or leave it mind-set.

Too many people think it's an unforgivable sin, taking it out of its biblical context and making it a #1 sin, claiming that Jesus (who is not recorded as having said one word about it) hated homosexuals. What Jesus really taught was that one should not cast the first stone. Look at some of the other biblical teachings that are given at least as much attention as homosexuality; for example, women speaking in church or having their hair uncovered; slaves being true to their masters; elders required to have one wife and children; etc. Cultures and cultural acceptance do change.

Too many people seem to assume that homosexuals are always promiscuous and heterosexuals never are, that homosexuals are pedophiliacs and heterosexuals never are; that homosexual marriage would threaten family values in the USA but that heterosexual adultery and a high divorce rate and misogyny and latch-key children do not.

Too many politicians are following Karl Rove's lead and using the hatred of homosexuals to bring out more a few more votes for right-wing conservatives.

Too many hate crimes involve the persecution of people assumed to be homosexual; too many kids are teased unmercifully and called fags and queers; too many teachers and religious leaders accept such behavior, even encourage it by their anti-gay rhetoric.

Sounds like a third-world country to me. One that definitely does not understand the concept of homosexuality.

Oh, by the way, I'm heterosexual, married (and faithful) to the same wife for many years, the father of straight children who seem to find as much pleasure as I have in heterosex. But what I hate is hatred. What I would like to discriminate against is discrimination. The people I respect are people who respect others. That's what I've taught my children. That, I think, is what living in a free society should involve.

WHy on Earth wouldn't they?
Homosexuality is a global thing, prctised across the globe?
They understand that it happens and what it involves but that is NOT to say that they tolerate it if that is what you mean

For example in the Middle East in Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia: If they find out a man is gay then his siters and the rest of his family are shamed and his sisters aren't allowed to marry.
They are also killed along with the whole shame thing

Sorry but just to say to Lugwrench that AIDS didn't originate from gay people. It originated from Monkeys and straight and gay people have an equal chance of getting it from unprotected sex.
AIDS is also passed on in the third world because people share needles and this causes/spreads AIDS.
How on EARTH can you think that only gay people can get AIDS its such a stupid old-fashioned ridiculous idea.

It is funny that few years back the pastors of a congregation in Africa had a discussion on homosexuality and they were planning to vote on it... Many who attended did not even get the concept.
