My husband has that problem with his Dodge duelly truck and needs to replace the ball barings. He's tried taking a sledgehammer and blowtorch to it with no luck. Even rust-remover doesn't help.

Just use what is known as a Bearing Puller. You can rent them.

To remove the bearing carrier just cut it off with the blow torch, just be careful not to damage the axle.To remove the race you can either cut it,or if you have access to a welding machine run a weld around the race and it will just knock out

Bearing puller. If you can't find one, cut it off with a hacksaw. A cutting torch makes it too easy to destroy the axle.

I used a dremel tool once to cut a race out. It took a little time but it did work...otherwise, an air hammer usually helps to losen things up. But, for the sure thing....a dremel tool with a cutting stone.

if its in the rear and the "pressed in" type they sell a puller that you can get behind it...a "slide hammer" type thing with a hook attachment at the end...another metheod thats worked for me is to use a dremel to slice the race ...just knock the rest of the bearing out (or use a slide hammer to pull it all apart) until only the rusted in race is left......slice it almost all the way through with the dremel cutter...dont cut into the housing or you'll get a leak...after its cut knock it out with a hammer and punch..it should break. hope it helps....

What exactly is he working on? (front or rear axle)
What is he trying to accomplish? (replace which bearings axle, carrier, spindle?) Why ? (what symptom or problem led him to this repair?)

you can use any puller that's large enough. i used a three armed puller that has a large bolt in the center wich you turn. can buy one at the hardware store or auto parts store...about 15 bucks.
