This question has been around for years and, answering only in the hypothetical... I've had the good-fortune to spend time tracking wolves after their reintroduction into Yellowstone Park. A Pitbull would stand no chance against a G. wolf. None. Others here have mentioned the 406psi biting force of a wolf but that's a 'non charge' bite force and it's often compared to the attacking/charging force of dogs. The source that people often quote in this regard made an error in data collection in this regard because the charge impacts the force the algorithm sensors record. If a G. Wolf were measured in the same comparison (which it was not) the recorded # would have been even higher and/or the dogs bite would have been less.

Often people who own pitbulls are consumed by this desire to have 'the toughest dog' and it clouds their judgment in this regard. As is evident by many who comment about the pitbulls prowess, stamina, persistence etc. I can assure you, after watching wolves take down prey 10-20x their size - a pitbull could, in no way, survive these attacks. If you've seen footage of the wolf and pitbull as they attack you can also get a 'feel', almost an intuition' with regard to a certain sense of 110% focus a wolf has - their attacks simply feel different in a way that's difficult to describe but as soon as you see it you realize it's simply not the same thing.

Lastly, there is such a level of sophistication to pack hunting - which a wolf almost always uses - that pitbulls could never, without centuries of breeding, fathom. You people who think pitbulls would take down a G. wolf - - you're delusional.

It depends on what breed of wolf that you are talking about. For instance, a Grey Wolf would DESTROY a Pit Bull (I know it's hard to imagine and I'm sorry, but it's life and facts), but maybe if it was a smaller breed of wolf such as a Red Wolf or a European Wolf, the Pit Bull may actually have a better chance!

Do not EVEN compare Pit Bulls to Mountain Lions. There have been very few occasions where they actually killed cougars, and most dies of flat out injury s. People forget on how often these cats kill dogs, Pit Bulls, Huskies, Labs, and even Mastiffs. No comparison. But Wolf vs Pit Bull, Wolf because they have a stronger bite, stronger, bigger, and they are wild.

I have seen a couple of videos of a wolf defeating a pitbul. I always thought a pit bull would stand a bigger chance, truth is, they just don't. In those videos after pit is hurt, owner shoots the wolf..

A friend of mine has two pit bulls and one time they killed a mountain lion... with cubs. However dogs didn't attack the three cubs.

"Pit Bull" type dogs can be animal aggressive especially if they weren't socialized at a young age. Even pit bull type dogs that aren't socialized properly can still be animal friendly. Most pit type dogs are very friendly, and great family pets. Those who own them know. To look at your question more closely and not to be smart. I think any dog is capable of anything. I wouldn't say either or. Dogs that are aggressive are typically aggressive to the same sex. It is a dominance thing to them. So regardless of size it would come down to which dog is more dominant regardless of breed. Pitbull type dogs are more of a natural athlete and built more solid. I would say that you need trying to introduce the two properly. Often dogs can be noisy like that as they are afraid. The Pit Bull breeds are not bred for aggression. If the pit bull type dog is showing aggression I would definitely keep them apart. Just make sure your enclosures are sturdy and well built and you shouldn't have a problem with them going toe to toe.

It is hard to say which animal would win. I know for a fact that some dogs can defeat wolfs. Caucasian Shepherd for centuries used to defend sheep from wolfs. There are numerous accounts that these dogs chase away or sometimes even kill wolfs. Although I suspect that they kill only young wolfs. At the same time Pit Bull defeats Caucasian Shepherd in the ring. Pit Bulls are made for the pit, they are too low for a big dog to reach throat, belly or legs and have more than enough power to maim and kill attacking these vulnerable areas. Fact that animal can hunt big game doesn't mean much. Another breed from former Soviet Union Laika is used to hunt deer, moose, bears. I have seen old video where hunters with bunch of Laika dogs and forked sticks catch live Usurian Tiger, but at the same time in Siberia wolfs kill Laika dogs with ease. Hunters immediately leash Laikas if they spot wolf. So well trained Pit Bull may defeat wolf by laying low and biting legs and belly, but there is no guarantee, if wolf gets one chance to reach throat or belly it will be end for Pit Bull.

It is the arrogance of people that want's them to believe that domesticated animals are superior including the pitbull. Reality is that wolves are a design that been around for thousands of years tried and and proven against weather, bears, mountain lions, and wolverines. The pitbull has been around a few hundred years bred to fight in a controlled enviroment, and even when hunting they have the luxury of a man with a gun to come to the rescue. People say the wolf is weak but when they are trying to make a better dog they always go back to the wolf. All hunters never go hunting a wolf even one wolf with one dog and do not expect the dogs to kill they wolf just to distract it until they put a bullet in it.
